WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MARK WORLD AIDS DAY 2025?
LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Hartlepool Borough Council
Promotion of World AIDS Day across various social media channels.
HIV awareness ribbons will be distributed to staff in offices to help raise awareness.
Middlesbrough Council
Illuminating the Town Hall and Central Library (on 1 December). The council will also be issuing a press release to raise awareness and the day will also be promoted through their Live Well and Middlesbrough Council Facebook pages.
Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is partnering with Teesside University to host a clinic and information stall on 2 December from 1 - 4pm.
THT has also organised a World AIDS Day quiz in collaboration with Hart Gables (LGBTQ+ service) via Zoom, as well as a quiz for Teesside University students.
In addition, there is a ‘Lunch and Learn’ session to take place on 3 December to raise awareness amongst council staff.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
To mark World AIDS Day, Redcar Civic Centre will be illuminated in red on 1 December. A press release will be issued to raise awareness, and the day will also be promoted through their Live Well, Feel Good Redcar and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council Facebook pages.
Newcastle City Council
On 19 November 2025, STI testing outreach and HIV/World AIDS Day awareness raising will take place at Number 52 Sauna.
On 26 November 2025, there will be World AIDS Day outreach and STI testing outreach using the Melissa Bus at Northumbria University.
On 28 November 2025, UTC North East Futures will host HIV awareness training, delivered in five one-hour sessions.
On 1 December 2025, an HIV awareness session for staff training will be held at CNTW.
On 9 December 2025, Northumbria University will feature an all-day World AIDS Day and HIV awareness stall.
On 11 December 2025, World AIDS Day outreach and STI testing outreach (Melissa Bus) will take place at Newcastle College.
On 20 December 2025, STI testing outreach and HIV/World AIDS Day awareness will return to Number 52 Sauna.
Northumberland County Council
Northumberland County Council will have a presence within their local shopping centre hosting a health information stall to share details about HIV, AIDS, and PrEP with the public.
24 November – Blyth and Ashington Leisure Centres
Health promotion stalls will be located at the main entrances.
26 November – Bedlington Academy Sixth Form - Workshops will be delivered for students aged 16 and over. These will include a segment dedicated to HIV awareness, promotion of PrEP and PEP, and the importance of condom use and testing. C-Card sign-ups will also be available on the day.
In addition, they are delivering three training sessions focused on HIV and AIDS awareness.
Durham County Council
Durham County Council have organised ‘An Evening with Rupert Whitaker’ on World AIDS Day, taking place at 6:00 pm on Monday 1 December 2025 at Durham University Business School, The Waterside Building, Riverside Place, Durham DH1 1SL.
Dr. Rupert Whitaker, co-founder of the Terrence Higgins Trust and the Tuke Institute, will share his personal experience of AIDS and HIV. He will be joined by speakers from Durham University, The Story and Public Health, who will discuss the changing experiences of HIV over the past 40 years, its impact in County Durham and what the future may hold.
This event is a collaboration between The Story, Durham University, and Public Health. The event is free, but booking is essential. Please see the attached flyer for details or book online at:

Darlington Borough Council will be engaging through:

North Tyneside
North Tyneside Council will be hosting a range of stalls and workshops as part of World AIDS Day activities.
On 1 December, a health promotion stall will be set up at the YMCA Main Hub, located next to the café and gym area.
Also on 1 December, a testing event and mini workshop will take place at YMCA Housing in North Shields, specifically for staff and residents.
Stockton Borough Council
Stockton is marking World AIDS Day with a strong focus on HIV prevention, testing, and treatment.
Local providers and the council will share awareness messages through social media, digital assets, and the Eyes Open online campaign.
Teesside Together resources will also be promoted across Stockton and neighbouring areas, using graphics and videos with a “Did you know…” theme on websites and waiting room screens.
On 1 December, Terrence Higgins Trust will host a drop-in session at the Stockton Wellbeing Hub, offering information, awareness, and point-of-care testing (POCT) for walk-ins and appointments.

Blue Sky Trust
There will be community arts showcase with the theme of protest art challenging HIV stigma at the Staiths Café in Gateshead for a week surrounding World AIDS Day, starting from Wednesday 26 November to Wednesday 3 December.
The art on display was created during a series of workshops organised by Teams and Dunston Alive, run by local artist Chris Folwell, supported by Blue Sky Trust. These workshops were hosted by Blue Sky Trust, The Drop-In – Dunston & Teams Youth Project, and Tyne Derwent Way, so the art produced includes the voices of local people living with HIV and local young people, among others.
